Senior Project Engineer



Company Overview: Founded in 1985, Blue Ridge Industries (BRI) began as a custom injection molder and assembler of plastic parts in Winchester, Virginia. Over the years, BRI has developed and expanded its injection molding capabilities with presses ranging from 84 to 950 tons. Summary: Due to rapid new and existing customer growth, BRI is seeking a motivated Senior ProjectEngineer (SPE) to add to its current team of Engineers. The SPE is responsible for “cradle-to-grave” engineering across multiple products and customers, working with customers and vendors to define product requirements, design products and associated manufacturing processes, evaluate and select raw materials, as well as create and test prototypes, all in accordance with BRI’s ISO9001-certified quality management system. It is BRI’s mission to achieve complete customer satisfaction while focusing on continuous improvement. The SPE works as across-functional technical team leader with other BRI departments to ensure all projects are completed within schedule and budget.

Responsibility: The SPE is responsible for meeting all project requirements through excellent engineering design and technical support, in close coordination with the customer and BRI vendors. The SPE provides technical assistance to all departments to prevent nonconforming product from being produced.

Duties & Responsibilities:
     
                     

  • Independently create, evaluate, improve, and optimize product designs through CAD, simulation, complex analysis, and advanced 3D prototyping to solve complex challenges and develop products that wow BRI customers and customers’ end users. Assists other BRI engineers with the same. (40%)
  • Lead assigned projects, proactively communicating directly to customers and vendors as the Subject Matter Expert to find high quality solutions. Document and design for product requirements, forecast and to meet project schedule. Resolve technical issues, implement design changes, optimize for injection molding Design-For-Manufacturing (DFM) andDesign for Automation (DFA), create, and manage CAD models/drawings in product data management PDM (systems), complete performance testing, and drive engineering project meetings. (20%)
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to manufacturing including, but not limited to during pilot production, part revision, material change trials, and generation of PPAP documentation. (15%)
  • Successfully complete all individual annual professional development goals. (10%)
  • Independently prepare basic and complex RFQs andPOs to tooling and other vendor partners. (5%)
  • Support management with product requirements, product data, and simulation results that enable BRI to win new design, product, and tooling projects. (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned. (5%)      
  • Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor of Science(BS) Plastics/Mechanical/Materials Engineering and at least eight (8) years related Project Engineering/Project Management experience.
  • Equipment usage: Must have at least five (5) years’ recent experience with a ComputerAided Design (CAD) program, preferably SOLIDWORKS®. Simulations (Plastic andFEA) experience desirable. Must be familiar with various types of dimensional and physical testing equipment. Direct injection molding machine and tooling design/manufacture experience desirable.
  • Language Skills: Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Must be able to interpret documents such as technical drawings (including those containing GD&T, schematics, or computer-generated reports. Must also be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Must understand and be able to comprehend Blue Ridge Industries’Quality Policy and Objectives.
  • Environmental Conditions: Individual may be exposed to hot, cold, and/or humid conditions and must be able to adapt accordingly. Must always adhere to safety regulations.
  • Physical Activity: Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to walk, talk, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Vision Requirements: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Location: This position is located at BRI headquarters in Winchester, VA. This position requires relocation to the Winchester, VA area. Ability to work from home (<20%)as project needs require.
  • Travel: Less than 10% travel to customer, supplier, training, and other local BRI sites is required.
  • Type of Employment: Full-time, salaried exempt. Weeks will vary, but this position can expect to work at least 45 hours per week to accomplish required individual and department goals.
  • Salary and Benefits: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. BRI offers nine (9)paid company holidays with a competitive vacation policy. Summary: BRI is seeking a highly motivated, independent Engineering Manager to lead a growing, highlyefficient, and productive team of four (4) engineers, as well as coordinate engineering activities acrossthe company management team. The Engineering Manager is both an individual contributor and a teammanager. As an individual project contributor, the Engineering Manager must be able to design parts,make informed material selections, and conduct design for manufacturing (DFM) just as other ProjectEngineers at BRI. As the team manager, the Engineering Manager is responsible for leading theEngineering Department including management of human and capital resources, ensuring qualityengineering products, establishing/maintaining internal and external organizational interfaces, andpromoting a culture of technical excellence and innovation. The Engineering Manager is responsible forcreating technical and design cost proposals, leading design/tooling reviews, approvingprojects/drawings, managing the department’s project cost/schedule/scope, and encouraging technicalinnovation that expands business opportunities and profitability. The Engineering Manager chairs thecompany Change Control Board and is responsible for timely and technically accurate changemanagement communication, completion, and implementation.

Duties & Responsibilities:
     
                     

  • Manage quality of all engineering projects, including designs, drawings, and tooling.(50%)
    – Manage APQP processes and all new product launches.
    – Review and ensure completeness/accuracy of all 3D models and 2D drawings.
    – Ensure projects are within budget and on schedule.
    – Develop/review tool and part quotes.
    – Manage all out-sourced tool builds and repairs.
  • Lead, define, and manage improvements of engineering procedures. (15%)
    –  Manage and oversee Engineering Change Request/Order system.
    –  Set department KPI’s and track metrics to report to Leadership.

  • Follow all ISO 9001 requirements including creating and maintaining ISO documents.(10%)
    –  Serve as section owner for relevant QM sections.
  • Manage organizational structure and human resources. (5%)
  • Provide Sales with technical support and estimates for proposals. (5%)
  • Assist in implementing continuous improvement activities in concert with other department managers. (5%)
  • Coordinate with Leadership and the Facilities Manager to research and make recommendations for capital investment projects that reduce cost and improve part quality, manufacturability, and safety. (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
  • Experience: Minimum seven (7) years of experience in Engineering Manager or Lead Project Engineer role in an injection molding environment. Experience working within ISO9001:2015and/or IATF Quality systems is desirable.
  • Education: Must have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or other technical degree.
  • Communication: Excellent English verbal and written communication skills are required. Must interpret documents like safety rules, engineering documents, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to analyze and summarize raw data to create reports, presentations, and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Must understand and promote Blue Ridge Industries’ Quality Policy. Must be able to perform basic and intermediate math skills. Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • IT (Information Technology): Must be knowledgeable of various computer software programs and hardware. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint). Must have at least four (4)years’ experience and be proficient in Computer Aided Design (CAD), preferably SOLIDWORKS®. Experience with Microsoft Project and DELMIAWORKS (IQMS) ERP system are desirable.
  • Equipment: Must be familiar with various forms of dimensional testing equipment and diverse types of physical testing equipment.
  • Environmental Conditions: Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Individuals may be exposed to cold, hot and/or humid conditions on the manufacturing floor. Must always adhere to safety regulations.
  • Physical Activity Requirements: Must be able to walk, talk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25lbs.
  • Vision Requirements: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Location: This position is at BRI headquarters inWinchester, VA. This position requires relocation to the Winchester, VA area. Limited telework (<20%) is an option in certain circumstances.
  • Travel: Less than 50% travel required. Travel to customers, suppliers, training, and other local BRI sites is required.
  • Type of Employment: Full-time, salaried exempt. Lunch and evening meetings as well as weekend travel may be required. Weeks will vary, but this position can expect to work at least 45hours per week to accomplish individual and department goals.
  • Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. BRI offers nine (9) paid company holidays with a competitive vacation policy.
